Chapter 6

Cain

With every step I take, my mood gets worse and worse.

True to what I claimed to Lyla, not minutes after I left the cabin the wind billowing through the mountains shifted harshly. The breeze no longer carries the comfortable chill of autumn, but it’s become frigid and so powerful that it drags at my jacket. The scent of rain is thick in the air, and it must’ve stormed all night long on the other side of the mountain because the river running close to my cabin is swollen and gushing up over the bank as I march toward the hunters’ camp.

Any minute now, it’s going to start pouring, and I better be on my way back to my cabin when that happens.

There’s nothing more dangerous than getting stuck in bad weather when you live in the middle of nowhere. Many people, both rangers and hikers, had been lost to this mountain that way. I refused to allow today to host any such loss.

With any luck, this will just be a quick trek out to the hunting camps, though it’s frustrating that I can’t use my truck. The narrow mountain ledges are better traversed on foot. Besides, there’s not much I can do to scare away a roaming mama bear who’s just trying to keep an eye on her cubs. I hope the hunters will be understanding when I tell them to steer clear of her. If they don’t, I'm going to have to be one in charge of dressing their wounds later, which is not what I want to do. I'm here to protect the lands and the animals, not to cater to reckless travelers. I’ve had my fill of that in tending to Lyla.

Speaking of Lyla... Leaving her behind has proved harder than I anticipated.

I don’t like many people, but there’s just something about that feisty, curvaceous blonde that pushes all my buttons in the best way. When I rescued her, I hadn't thought I’d get attached to her at all. I’d thought I would just fix her up and send her on her way without a thought, but the short time I’ve spent with her has been irksome and exhilarating and confusing. Even arguing with her is fun in a bizarre way. And when she smiles...

Our time together hasn’t been long, but after she leaves, I think my cabin might feel a whole lot emptier than it did before.

Behind me, a stick suddenly cracks.

My whole body immediately tenses as I whirl silently toward the noise. My skilled ears listen closely as I hold my breath and wait for another sound. Normally, I'm one of the most perceptive rangers living on this mountain. Working in the wilderness does that to a person. Unfortunately, thinking about Lyla has distracted me.

Dammit, isn’t this why I’d so resolutely decided that I would get her to leave as soon as it was safe? I need to focus on my job and my duties at this park, not on the fact that Lyla’s blue eyes are the same shade as the sparkling ponds nestled in the heart of my beloved mountains.
